With gyms closed during this quarantine, it’s a good idea to take up one of the greatest workout classics – running. Previously, we talked about the benefits of running and how to get started, but this time we take it a step further.
In this blog, we’re featuring Veronica, one of VIIVA’s terrific graphic designers, who also happens to be an avid and dedicated runner. There’s a lot to learn from someone who diligently practices a routine.
It’s proven that when you do something well, the skill of learning transfers to other skills; and is particularly important when acquiring new skills – such as growing your VIIVA business! How awesome is that? To quote Miyamoto Musashi, “From one thing, know ten thousand things.”
Without further ado – enter Veronica!
When did you first start running?
I was always active growing up because my parents always signed me up for sports. From karate, tennis, soccer, etc. It wasn’t until high school that I truly found my love for running.
What made you start running?
I had tried out for the soccer team my freshman year of high school and didn't make it. In an attempt to get out of PE and be a part of a team I joined the cross-country program where there were no tryouts.
Little did I know, I would incorporate running into my life because of the enjoyment I still get out of it. After high school, I continued running as my exercise and went onto participating in several half marathons and 5k’s. My goal is to do a marathon in my lifetime.
How does running improve your life?
Running truly improves my life in so many ways. Apart from the physical benefits and the endurance I have now on walks or hikes, I feel so much better mentally. Whether I’m running 2 miles or 7, I feel happier and more accomplished with my day.
What advice do you have for someone who’s never ran a mile in his or her life but wants to get started?
My advice to new runners is simply to listen to your body. If something isn’t feeling right then slow down, walk, do what you need to do. Your body is trying to tell you something. Work up to higher mileage and don’t be afraid to walk. The worst thing you can do is just jump into high mileage if you’re not properly trained, stretched, etc.
Also, stretch! One of the absolute BEST things you can do for your body to prevent injuries. The running itself is quite simple. If you’re truly just getting started, start with a 10-minute walk or jog and go from there.
What are your favorite times to run and why?
My favorite times to run are when it’s the first thing I do in the morning. It’s a great feeling to be done with your workout while some people are still asleep; you feel productive and it follows throughout the day.
What’s your favorite running gear?
I really recommend getting the right running shoes! I would go to a store that specializes in running and if that’s not around you or is too expensive then talk to an employee at a sporting store that could help you pick out the right ones.
Injuries could be prevented by picking the right shoes for you. It’s worth the time to find the perfect shoe to take you for miles! My favorite brands are Brooks, ASICS, and Saucony.
What’s your favorite running music?
Whatever is upbeat keeps me going! My running music has definitely varied throughout the years, started with no music in cross country. Then it went to rap (Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Big Sean), electro/rave (Skrillex, Excision, Diplo), and now rock.
If AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Black Sabbath comes on rest assured I’m not changing it. I’d also recommend the Talking Heads album, Stop Making Sense. It’s all live and there is so much energy in that, it’s bound to keep you going.
